Divers Quarters is our largest shack and was originally built to house some of our pioneering lugger crew. This five-bedroom shack with air-conditioned bedroom is the perfect escape for a group of friends or large families. Situated just under a kilometre from the main farm village, reception area and restaurant, it is situated in a tranquil location with views to the tidal lagoon and divers creek.

The pearling industry has always attracted a multi-cultural workforce to the Broome area, and it was no different here on the farm. The Brown family had worked with local Aboriginal families since their arrival onto the peninsula, and from 1961 until the mid-1970’s, our lugger was crewed by Malays, who came to work for the farm under the indentured labour scheme operated by the Australian government until the mid-1970’s.

In the Australian pearling industry, Asian crews were the norm until the 1970’s. A major development in the industry at this time was the introduction of the hookah diving system, with more streamlined wetsuits and air supplied from a compressor on demand. The copper helmet diving suit, in use for almost one hundred years and to this day an icon of the industry, was retired. With the new hookah diving system came an influx of new Australian divers, and Divers Quarters had some new occupants.

Divers Quarters has now been renovated and upgraded to include a few creature comforts such as air conditioners and king size beds. It would make the ‘Old Salts’ turn in their grave to see how comfortable the living conditions are today.
